How it's calculated

If you enter an APY, the balance after the term is the deposit times one plus that yield, raised to the years in the term. The APR is the nominal rate that compounds to the same APY. If you enter an APR, interest is credited at that rate divided by the number of compounding periods, and the APY is the yield after a full year of that compounding. The early-withdrawal figure is the deposit times the APR, divided by 12, times the months of penalty.

Questions

What is the difference between APY and APR?

APY is the yield for a full year after compounding. APR here is the nominal rate before compounding. Enter one, and the other is calculated from how often interest is credited.

How is the early-withdrawal penalty estimated?

The estimate is the deposit times the nominal APR, divided by 12, times the number of months you enter. It is a simple interest penalty, not a quote from a bank.

Does compounding change an APY result?

If you enter an APY, the ending balance follows that annual yield. Compounding still changes the equivalent APR. If you enter an APR, more frequent compounding raises the APY and the ending balance.
