How it's calculated

Each month adds interest at one twelfth of the APR, then subtracts your payment. A fixed payment stays the same until the last month, which is only what is left. A target date uses the payment that clears the balance in the months from the first payment through the month you choose. Interest stays at full precision until it is shown to the cent.

A typical minimum

The comparison pays the greater of 1% of that month's balance plus the interest, or $25, and never more than the payoff amount. The minimum gets smaller as the balance falls. If your own payment is at or below the interest, the balance can grow and the plan stops at 50 years.

Questions

How is a typical minimum payment estimated?

Each month the estimate uses the greater of 1% of the remaining balance plus that month's interest, or $25. It is never more than the amount that would pay the balance off. A card issuer's own minimum can differ.

What if my payment does not cover the interest?

The balance can grow. The plan warns you, keeps running, and stops at 50 years if the balance is still there. A payment above the interest reduces the balance.

How is the payment for a target date calculated?

The payment is the fixed amount that pays the balance off in the months from the first payment through the month you choose. A higher rate or a shorter window raises that payment.
