How it's calculated

The monthly payment uses the standard fixed-rate formula. If the origination fee is deducted, you borrow the loan amount and receive that amount minus the fee. If it is not deducted, you receive the loan amount and the fee is added to the balance you repay. The schedule follows the amount financed. Figures stay at full precision until they are shown to the cent.

Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n)
At 0% APR, payment = P ÷ n
P = amount financed, r = APR ÷ 12, n = months

Effective APR

The effective APR is the rate that makes the monthly payment equal the cash you actually receive. A fee makes it higher than the note rate, because you either receive less cash or repay a larger balance. With no fee, it matches the APR you entered.

Questions

How does an origination fee change the amount I receive?

If the fee is deducted, you borrow the loan amount and receive that amount minus the fee. If it is not deducted, you receive the full loan amount and the fee is added to the balance you repay.

What is the effective APR?

The effective APR is the rate that makes the monthly payment equal the cash you actually receive. A fee pushes it above the note rate. With no fee, it matches the APR you entered.

What is included in the total cost?

Total cost is every scheduled payment: the amount financed plus interest. When the fee is deducted, you repay the full loan amount even though you received less. When it is added to the loan, the fee is part of the amount financed.
