How it's calculated

Sales tax is estimated on the vehicle price minus the trade-in. The amount financed is the price, minus the down payment, minus the trade-in, plus that sales tax. Fees, add-ons, and any amount still owed on the trade-in are not included. A lender that rounds each payment to the cent can differ by a few cents, because this schedule keeps full precision and rounds only for display.

Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n)
At 0% APR, payment = P ÷ n
P = amount financed, r = APR ÷ 12, n = months

An extra monthly payment is applied to principal after that month's interest. The last payment is only the remaining balance plus its interest. This matches a simple-interest amortizing loan when the lender applies the extra amount to principal. A precomputed-interest loan does not work this way.

Questions

How is the monthly car payment calculated?

The payment uses the fixed-rate formula on the amount financed, the APR, and the number of months. At 0% APR, the payment is the amount financed divided by the months.

How is sales tax estimated?

Sales tax is the vehicle price minus the trade-in, times the tax rate you enter. The amount financed is the price, minus the down payment, minus the trade-in, plus that tax.

What does an extra monthly payment change?

The extra amount goes to principal after that month's interest. The loan can end sooner, and the last payment is only the remaining balance plus its interest.

What is left out of this estimate?

Fees, add-ons, and any amount still owed on the trade-in are not included. A lender that rounds each payment to the cent can differ by a few cents.
